BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — The Science Gateway Institute is inviting paper submissions for its workshop at the upcoming IEEE Cluster 2013 conference. The Indiana University Pervasive Technology Institute (PTI) will host the conference, which takes place September 23-27 at the Hilton Indianapolis. The Science Gateway Institute’s full-day workshop is scheduled for September 27.
Created through a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant, the Science Gateway Institute is composed of several partner universities, including Indiana University. The San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) at the University of California, San Diego is the lead institution on the NSF grant. Other partner institutions include Elizabeth City State University; Purdue University; the Texas Advanced Computing Center at the University of Texas, Austin; and the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
Science gateways are web-based portals, tools, applications and data collections that integrate resources to further scientific studies and help save researchers both time and money. Through science gateways, researchers can access top-tier resources that might otherwise be off-limits, including applications running on a supercomputer, remote instruments (such as a telescope or electron microscope) and curated data collections. Gateways also provide researchers with a venue in which to collaborate and share results, curricula and presentations.
“We are just beginning to see the web’s tremendous impact on the conduct of science,” said Nancy Wilkins-Diehr, principal investigator for the Science Gateway Institute and associate director at the SDSC. “Workshops like this one provide rare opportunities for those developing web portals for science, also known as science gateways, to discuss experiences, techniques and the high-level planning activities that are needed to fundamentally change the future of science.”
Workshop organizers are seeking papers covering topics related to science gateways, such as portal technology, security, workflows, educational gateways and success stories. The deadline to submit a workshop paper is August 31. To participate, visit the EasyChair site at bit.ly/1cSPrXw.
IEEE Xplore online will publish proceedings from the workshop, and the Concurrency and Computation: Practice and Experience journal will publish extended versions of some workshop papers in a special issue.
